28. Communication disorders

Communication is not a mystery. It involves harmonising thoughts, symbols and speech while making sure the message is understood. Simple, isn't it? Just align one's ideas, express oneself clearly, make oneself understood, listen and infer meaning.

For people on the autism spectrum, many elements can disrupt this process. Yet once the AS person has managed to grasp all the information needed for the exchange, they prove to be an exceptional communicator: a spokesperson, a presenter of ideas, even an outstanding salesperson.

As long as exchanges do not venture into human relationships and social interactions, everything goes well. In the professional world, however, specific support is needed both for the AS person and for their environment. In this regard, Marie Harder of the University of Bristol has produced a short book that the AS individual can share at work to promote better mutual understanding.

An illustrated book by Marie K. Harder on AS, for loved ones and colleagues.
