6. Isolation

Isolation is a consequence of exclusion by society and a lack of shared social reference points with those around us. What is different in the AS person becomes a real disability that can be described as a pervasive disorder, because it takes hold step by step and social contact becomes almost impossible. The AS person suffers from this loneliness. Social difficulties are a stereotype of AS people that, for once, I can confirm. It becomes increasingly difficult to approach others as the traumas of failed communication pile up. In some cases, it resembles Japanese hikikomori: the AS person shuts themselves in their room, no longer goes out; sometimes a family member is allowed in to bring food.

Coming out of isolation and resuming social contact against the current of anxiety, finding shared interests with others, and gradually rebuilding trust. Behavioural therapy (CBT) is a valuable aid, but it is better to find a therapist you can trust and get along with.
