22. Obsessive cycles
I have observed obsessive cycles in AS people. For periods of varying length, the AS person finds fulfilment in a particular activity or subject, meeting the needs of the moment. These phases can last up to three years — a duration I use as an example because it reflects my personal experience. At the end of this period comes an intermediate phase marked by depression that smothers all enthusiasm, until a new obsession emerges.
As a support person, it is therefore essential always to consider new ideas for what comes next, especially since preparation time is precious. The transition between these cycles is difficult, and it is over time that the AS person learns to manage depression.
