63. Hyperfocus disorders

The AS knows extreme attention to detail, work and creation. It is a gift, but also a social prison in which he or she is confined; hyperfocus makes it possible to filter out everything superfluous, but simultaneously excludes social contact. Energy is not always available. This state can last day and night when sustained by the distribution of oxytocin; we feel a slight euphoria, and our concentration and strength increase.

When he entered his bubble of concentration, he was unreachable; he did not even hear his name or see incidents happening right beside him. “It's not fair, it's not friendly, it's not polite and it's not kind”

(a quotation from the series Poldark), says someone close to him who feels completely excluded and mistreated. This is not a rare situation; it happens regularly.

I have always paid extreme attention to detail, both in my work and in my creations. This precious gift, distinctive to AS individuals, also proved to be a kind of social prison in which I often felt confined. My hyperfocus allowed me to eliminate everything superfluous, but at the same time it isolated me from human contact. My energy was not inexhaustible; this state could persist day and night, especially when the release of oxytocin washed over me, bringing a slight euphoria and strengthening both my concentration and my strength.
