67. Effects of sugar
Throughout my journey, I have come to understand how much sugar, ubiquitous and formidably addictive, can affect our everyday lives. This compound, particularly in the form of trisaccharides, is much more than a simple pleasure for the palate: it disrupts concentration, drains energy, encourages poor fat storage and throws metabolism out of balance. For those of us who live with autism spectrum disorders, as well as for “zebras”, hyperactive people and, indeed, everyone, this stimulant that disrupts the brain and hormonal system presents a real challenge.
I have often reflected on this vicious circle of addictions that keeps us in a state of constant consumption. Sugar, salt, glutamates (which excite the brain), alcohol, tobacco, coffee, not forgetting refined flours and cereals as well as gluten, form a chain that, though seemingly harmless to some, creates profound dysfunction. This is particularly true for those who struggle every day for a dignified existence. It seems essential to me, especially for those concerned, to rethink these habits in order to envisage a more balanced life.
